Presented by Japan Society of Northern California in collaboration with Theatre of Yugen
Date and Time: Saturday, January 25, 2025 @ 6PM
Venue: Theatre of Yugen’s NOHSpace (2840 Mariposa Street, SF)
Performer: Ume Nakamura (Nihonbuyō dancer)
Moderator: Michi Kaifu (CEO, Enotech Consulting & Co-Chair, Programming Committee of Japan Society of Northern California)
NIHONBUYO, literally “Japanese dance,” is an elegant style of classical Japanese dance that defies easy definition. Though its influences include traditional performing art forms such as kabuki, Noh, kyōgen, and bunraku, all of which were historically exclusive to male performers, NIHONBUYO stands apart as a style that is also traditionally performed by women. Blending graceful dance with subtle pantomimic technique, NIHONBUYO is a form of storytelling that conjures emotion and atmosphere through the simple power of movement.
