Theatre of Yugen presents a series of staged readings that address themes of memory and history, including trauma, identity, culture, society, genetic memory, spiritual memory, etc. We ask you to submit a piece that considers the following question:
How do we manifest our memories and histories on stage through our art?
Works must also explore the concept of yūgen (幽玄), the Japanese aesthetic that is utilized throughout the breadth of our company’s work:
Yū (幽): Deep, Quiet, Otherworldly - Gen (玄): Subtle, Profound, Dark
Yūgen is a "[a] profound, mysterious sense of the beauty of the universe ... and the sad beauty of human suffering". 1 It suggests that which is beyond what can be said, but it is not an allusion to another world.2
